Also, several important safety and convenience options such as side curtain airbags, power-adjustable pedals, a tire-pressure monitoring system and automatic windshield wipers debut this year.

Pros:
  • Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.

  • Noisy and unrefined, questionable reliability.

  • Happy With Purchase - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

We purchased our 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo two years ago with 22K on the clock. Have had no major problems with vehicle, only thing that did happen was the drivers side window came off the track and had to be replaced. We bought the extended warranty to 80K so we were covered. Will be trading it in on a used Suburban - not because we are unhappy with the Jeep, we just need more room. We will miss it!

  • Disappointed - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My previous experience with Jeep has always been positive. However, this extended warranty nightmare is turning me off Jeep products. The first few repairs (note: not covered under warranty) seemed trivial enough, but when the regulator went out I started reviewing complaints online. It seems that the little problems I am having are systemic to Jeep owners in this year range. Compaints: ashtray doesnt stay up, parts replaced: hood lifts, gas cap, rotors, starter, window regulator(s), mirror memory doesnt stay, head lights turn on by themself, heated seat temps too far apart: too cool or too hot, differential leaks. Not too happy.

  • Year older...no problems - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Ive had my Jeep for nearly a year now without a single problem. Its my third Jeep product and by far the best. The ONLY down side to the current Jeep line is the blandness of the dash. If more of the brushed aluminum was used throughout (rather than just around the radio), itd be a better lookin interior.

  • Poor design on window motor - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Love everything about this SUV except the issue with the window motor. Replaced the window motor on the drivers side at 60,000 miles; back passenger left side at 75,000 miles; sunroof motor went out at 100,000 miles, now the back passenger right side just went out at 130,000 miles. Refuse to have it repaired at $350, so Im currently looking to trade for a new car. Will not purchased a Jeep because of the window motor issues. With all the complaints about this problem, you would think Jeep would have recalled the cars to correct the problem. In the long run, they are losing a great deal of business by using choosing to look the other way.

  • Poor Service - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

This has been a comfortable vehicle for long trips. Brakes and handling are soft. While I love the looks & comfort, service is non-existent. The memory feature has not worked properly from the time we bought it. The rear-end had bad bearings, and the A/C only works on short trips & leaks on the floor. These problems were all taken to several different dealerships, and the common response was "Could not Duplicate" the problem. The only thing that was fixed was the bearing, only because I told them what bearing to fix. Three of the four window regulators have broken. The transmission operates normally for the most part but will slam in & out of gear occasionally. Fuel mileage is at 20 mpg.

  • Couple of Quirks - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Overall I like it. Power of V8 is great. With Quadra drive, turning tight turns, jumps, jerks etc. from full time 4 x 4. Rear seat leg room could be better. Had a Nissan Murano; loved it, but would not pull my trailer -- this Jeep will with ease. Just hope the tranny and rotors hold up to 100k miles. Ride is a little shaky, not as refined as most suvs these days.

  • Proud Owner Of A Rock Solid 2002 JCG - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I am the original owner of a 2002 JGC Laredo I6/RWD with very little extras and I cant praise this vehicle enough. Now has 105k miles and no major problems to report. Did have the passenger window motor fail and the A/C had to be replaced last summer. I have used Mobil 1 synthetic on all oil changes since 1000 miles and the engine is still strong. Over 8 years, I have AVERAGED 18.5 MPG and get 23 easily on the highway at 70 MPH. From reading the reviews, it seems that my results are not typical, but I do take great care in driving and maintaining my mighty JGC. The exterior styling is classic, the interior is functional and comfortable and even without 4WD it handles the snow like a champ!

ive had my jgc for 3 years.i had a few of the popular problems, such as jerking forward after coming to a complete stop.after 3 visits to the dealer(and a new drivetrain),that problem was solved.the transmission stinks!it jerks forward when accelerating.the overall design is great, but they need to do something about this transmission.there is no shot of buying this vehicle!

  • Wish they still made this - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

While the ride is more "truck" than car it has served me well over the 178K miles I have driven it. Gas mileage is poor, about 20 at best on the hwy and around 15 in the winter around town. For the winter it cant be beat, powering through snow, slush and the assorted gunk. The strong torque to the rear wheels in 2WD causes some spinning out when accelerating from a stop on wet or slick surfaces. But slip into Full Time or Part Time 4WD and traction is excellent. It is expensive to own, Ive replaced the transmission, numerous struts, links and what all but the engine will not die.
